2023 Puerto Rico DIY Trip
Wow, Puerto Rico is awesome. We spent 5 days fishing the SW corner of the island on foot and we rented a boat for a couple of days as well. The main goal was tarpon but we'd take anything we could get. Day one we were on foot working the bugs out literally. Plenty of skeeters! In the afternoon we found a really cool spot on the west side of the island and Aaron hooked into a 40lb tarpon while walking the beach. He jumped it and it was gone in a flash. Gahhhhhh!!!!! We went back the next day and caught some jacks and a couple of small barracuda, a houndfish and a few tiny snapper varieties. The tarpon we saw on the 2nd day were one cast too far out to reach. Always. The third and fourth day we rented a little skiff and had success with tarpon!! Nothing huge to speak of but plenty of action in a little bay about a half hour from the town we were staying in. The fifth day we were back on foot and it was the slowest day of the trip. We tried a couple of new spots with no success. The last day we headed back to the airport and tried a lake that had peacock bass with no success either. We only fished for an hour at the peacocks though as we were short on time. We highly recommend Puerto Rico! Stop in the shop if you have any questions about where to go.
